The problem, explained
Concrete masonry units (CMU) are the workhorse of structural masonry — foundations, walls, and utility structures. Block fails when it is laid without reinforcement where the load needs it, without proper joint filling, or without control joints where the wall wants to crack. Done right, block is strong, economical, and long-lasting. Done wrong, it cracks along the lines the wall was trying to move.
How we do it
- 1Lay out the wall, the openings, and the reinforcement required for the load.
- 2Set the block plumb, level, and straight with full mortar joints.
- 3Install reinforcement — rebar and grout — where the structure requires it.
- 4Place control joints where the wall will want to move.
- 5Tool the joints and review the finished wall with you.
What it costs to think about
Block and CMU work is priced by the square footage, the wall thickness and reinforcement, the number of openings, and the access. We give a written estimate after seeing the scope.

What is the difference between block and brick?
Concrete block (CMU) is larger, structural, and usually hidden or finished. Brick is smaller, often decorative, and usually the visible face. Block carries load; brick often faces it. Many walls use both — block structure with a brick face.
Why do block walls crack in straight vertical lines?
Concrete block wants to move with temperature and settlement, and it cracks where the stress builds up. Control joints are intentional, weakened vertical lines that tell the wall where to crack, so it cracks neatly instead of randomly. Walls without control joints crack where they want.
Do block walls need reinforcement?
Structural block walls — foundations, retaining walls, load-bearing walls — need rebar and grout in the cores to carry the load. Non-structural walls may not. We engineer the reinforcement for what the wall is doing.
Can you lay block for a foundation or basement?
Yes. We lay block foundations and basement walls with the reinforcement, the footing connection, and the waterproofing the wall needs. Foundation block work generally requires a permit, which we pull.
