The problem, explained
Mortar is designed to be softer than the brick it holds. It is the sacrificial element — meant to fail first so the brick survives. When mortar erodes, the fix is repointing: cutting out the failed mortar to a clean depth and packing in new mortar matched to the original. The most expensive mistake in repointing an older Indianapolis home is using a hard modern Portland-heavy mortar on soft historic brick. The joint becomes stronger than the brick, movement is forced into the brick face instead, and the faces spall off. That damage is not reversible. Matching the original mortar is the core skill in this work.

What it costs to think about
Repointing is priced by the square footage of wall, the depth of the failed mortar, the height and access, and the mortar match required. Historic homes with soft lime mortar take more care and a different mix than modern walls. We give a written estimate after seeing the wall.

What is the difference between tuckpointing and repointing?
The terms are used interchangeably in this market. Strictly, repointing is cutting out and replacing failed mortar. Tuckpointing originally referred to a decorative technique of cutting a groove and filling it with a contrasting mortar line. When a contractor here says tuckpointing, they usually mean repointing. We do both and we explain which one your wall needs.
Why does it matter what mortar you use on an old house?
Older brick is soft. If you repoint it with hard modern Portland-heavy mortar, the joint becomes stronger than the brick. Movement is then forced into the brick face, and the faces spall off — damage that cannot be reversed. Matching the original softer mortar is the whole point of the work.
How deep do you cut out the old mortar?
We cut to a clean depth — typically at least twice the joint width — so the new mortar has enough material to bond and hold. A shallow repoint looks fine for a season and then falls out. Depth is what separates a real repoint from a cosmetic one.
How do I know if my wall needs repointing?
If mortar is recessed well back from the brick face, crumbling, or washing out at the bottom of the wall, it is time. If you can scrape mortar out of the joint with a key, the wall is failing. We confirm the scope during the estimate.
Does repointing require a permit?
Cosmetic repointing generally does not require a permit in Marion County and surrounding jurisdictions. If the repointing is part of a larger structural repair, a permit may apply. We confirm with your local building department.
