The problem, explained
A retaining wall fails when it is built without drainage, without a proper footing, or without enough mass for the earth behind it. The wall leans, cracks, and eventually tips. The fix is almost always behind the wall — the drainage, the base, and the structure — not the face. A masonry retaining wall above a certain height generally requires a permit and engineering, and we tell you when it does.
How we do it

- 3Build the wall with block, stone, or brick suited to the exposure.
- 4Install drainage — gravel, pipe, weeps — so water does not build up behind it.
- 5Pull the permit where required and review the finished wall with you.
