In a freeze-thaw climate, a base that holds water or settles will heave and crack the masonry above it within a few seasons. The work that lasts is built on a base that drains, set with mortar or sand suited to the surface, and pitched to shed water. The base is the whole job; the surface is what you see.

Why did my patio crack and heave?
Almost always the base. In a freeze-thaw climate, a base that holds water or has settled will heave when it freezes and crack the surface above it. The fix is rebuilding the base, not just resetting the surface.
Brick, stone, or paver — which lasts best outdoors here?
All three can last when the base is right. Brick and natural stone carry a more traditional look; concrete pavers offer more patterns and colors. The base and the drainage matter more than the surface material.
Do you pour a concrete base under brick or stone?
For some surfaces — steps, porches, landings — a concrete slab with the brick or stone set in mortar is the right approach. For patios and walkways, a compacted aggregate base with sand or mortar bedding is often better for drainage. We design the base for the surface and the site.
How do you pitch a patio so it drains?
We pitch the surface a gentle fraction of an inch per foot away from the house and any adjacent hardscape, so water runs off rather than pooling. Standing water is what kills outdoor masonry in this climate.
